Caught in a period where major labels aren’t signing and independence becomes more important, emerges an artist that doesn’t let preconceived notions effect him and his style. SeRiSoNy is an ever-evolving hip-hop artist. Trying to find a medium between his Northern and Southern Hip-Hop Influences, he mainly chooses the back drop of classic boom-bap sample driven music to express himself and his story. He is an ordinary person with a dream, just like you.
SeRiSoNy was born April 24th 1984 and raised in Oakland Park, Florida. One of the many cultural melting pots of America. This environment allowed him to appreciate many other races cultures, and gave him an understanding that people are bonded by what they have in common. Growing up without money, a child in the “lower middle class” he never had much and learned to appreciate what he did have in his life. His family was quite dysfunctional. His parents did what they could but having marital problems holding the family together became an after thought. They were struggling to stay together and dealing with drug addiction.
Becoming aware of these issues at a very early age, SeRiSoNy had no other choice but to grow up quickly. His older sister and her boyfriend became the parental figures he needed in his life. The constant thing he had in his life to help him through these hard times though, was music. Music played a major role in his upbringing, besides his father exposing him to different music, his father always played electric guitar. He was always enamored by the music.
At the times his family was able to afford cable television, MTV became a fixture. This channel exposed him to an even wider variety of music, including Hip-Hop. Thanks to artists such as Sir Mix A Lot, Criss Cross, MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice he got his first impression of the culture. His family didn’t take interest like he did and for fear of what they might think he never got his chance to dive into the rest of the culture. It wasn’t until he was away from home and hanging out with his friends that he was really exposed to the culture. Through a friends older brother he was exposed to a song that changed everything Eazy-E’s “Gimme That Nut”. The freedom and explicit nature of the song made him curious, so anything he could get his hands on from Lil Kim and 2 Live Crew to N.W.A and 2pac he was giving it a listen.
Fast forward to 1999 his freshman year in High School, he still hadn’t fully embraced the Hip-Hop culture. It wasn’t until he caught the now infamous Eminem’s video “Hi My Name Is” and listened to “The Slim Shady LP” that he became addicted to this music. He had someone in the culture that he could easily relate with, which also got him interested in the art form and the rest of the culture. He still had no interest in doing this type of music himself, though he now knew it was possible because the race barriers had came down a little more. It wasn’t until toward the end of High School in the years 2002-2003 that he began to write his own lyrics. He was always good with english and spelling, and writing poetry. He just wasn’t aware he could bring it into song form.
Today he has written and recorded hundreds of songs. A lot of them not for public consumption, he has learned to perfect and hone his craft over the years. He is still an artist in development because he realizes that your craft should always be evolving and getting better. In 2009 he released the mixtape “An Acquired Taste” under his tag name Sleapy or Sleap. He decided that the name sounded gimmicky though, and wanted to represent something more real. So he shelved the project and took the time to create more music and now under the moniker SeRiSoNy (a phonetically way to pronounce his actual last name “Cirricione”) he is finally releasing his music publicly. Right Rhymes Vol.1 (released Oct. 10th 2011) is the first project since his alias change. He knows he will eventually impact the Hip-Hop culture with his music. This is just the first step in that process.
